Breakfast in Palm Beach: every option, honestly ranked

Palm Beach mornings run on a schedule nobody tells you about. By 8:30 the pancake houses have lines. By 9:30 the buffets are charging dinner prices for eggs. By 10:00 the good palapas are taken and half your beach day is spent deciding where to eat. We deliver breakfast into this neighborhood every morning, so here is the full picture, including the options that are not us.

Option 1: the pancake houses

Palm Beach does Dutch pancakes seriously, and places like Linda's Dutch Pancakes and Crazy Pancakes have earned their reputations: enormous, properly made, worth doing once. The catch is that everyone agrees, so in high season the walk-in lines start early. The play: go at opening or after 10:30, and treat it as the day's event rather than fuel.

Option 2: the cafes

Spots like Craft do excellent coffee-and-brunch mornings with a calmer pace. Great for a slow day; less great when three kids want the beach twenty minutes ago.

Option 3: the resort buffet

Convenient, air-conditioned, and 25 to 40 dollars per person. For a couple, that is manageable once or twice. For a family of four on a seven-day trip, daily buffets quietly become the most expensive restaurant of the vacation, at 700 to 1,100 dollars of scrambled eggs.

Option 4: supermarket grab-and-go

The budget classic: yogurt, fruit, and pastries from Super Food or Ling & Sons. Works fine, involves a car, a queue, and a hotel mini-fridge that is 80 percent beer. No shame in it, but nobody comes home talking about it.

Option 5: the local way

Here is what the people serving you all week actually eat: a warm pastechi and a fresh fruit smoothie from a neighborhood snack stand, early, for a few dollars.
