What is a pastechi?

Ask any Aruban what breakfast smells like and they will say pastechi: a golden, deep-fried half-moon pastry, crispy and bubbled on the outside, filled with melted cheese, seasoned meat, or chicken. It is the island's favorite snack, eaten warm from paper bags outside neighborhood snack stands from sunrise.

The flavors we fry every morning

At Pineapple Express in Ponton we fry pastechi fresh from 6:30am: cheese and ham & cheese (.25), and meat, chicken, and pizza (.50). Locals usually pair one with a fresh fruit smoothie; that combo is our Daily Pick.

Pastechi's cousins: kroket, deditos, batata

The pastechi family includes the kroket (a crumbed, creamy Dutch Caribbean croquette), deditos (fried cheese fingers, also with hotdog), and batata jena (stuffed potato). Our Local Taste Tour box packs all of them into one order, the fastest way to eat like an Aruban.

Where to try it
